Responsibilities
- Prepare, review, file, and serve pleadings, affidavits, motion materials, correspondence, and court documents in accordance with strict procedural deadlines.
- Prepare documents, pleadings, claims, motion materials, affidavits of documents, mediation, bills of costs and pre-trial memoranda.
- Assist with preparation for examinations for discovery, including document organization and exhibit preparation.
- Monitor limitation periods, court deadlines, undertakings, and follow-ups, ensuring all timelines are met without exception.
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date physical and electronic files, including filing and version control within firm systems.
- Ensure compliance with undertakings given at discovery and organize and evaluate materials received in response to undertakings.
- Manage electronic data for Discovery and Trial.
- Liaise with court staff, process servers, opposing counsel, and lawyers as required.
- Organize and maintain litigation files, including briefing file material and ensuring completeness and accuracy.
- Summarize transcripts of examinations for discovery and prepare lists of undertakings and refusals.
- Preparation of medical and litigation summaries.
- Trial preparation.
- Drafting mediation and settlement conference briefs.
Qualifications
- Law Clerk diploma or equivalent experience.
- Law Clerk Diploma from a recognized Community College or an Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario (ILCO) Certificate.
- Minimum 2-5 years’ experience in a litigation law firm; insurance defence experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of the ON Rules of Civil Procedure and court practices at various levels
- Proficiency with legal practice management and document management systems.
- Strong typing and computer skills, including proficiency in MS Word, Outlook, and Windows-based applications.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Efficient docketing and time management skills with a commitment to excellence and detail.
- Knowledge of Summation, Eclipse, iManage, and other industry-standard litigation support software is an asset.
